An automobile, motor car or car is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting passengers, which also carries its own engine. They are constructed for the transport of people or goods.
There are approximately about  1 billion cars and light trucks on the roads today and they burn over a billion cubic meters of petrol and diesel fuel yearly.
Karl Benz  is generally acknowledged as the inventor of the modern automobile.
An automobile powered by his own engine was built in Mannheim, Germany by Karl Benz in 1885. He began to sell his production vehicles in 1888.
Older automobiles were generally powered by a steam engine, which was fed by burning petrol. Most automobiles in use today are propelled by an internal combustion engine, fueled by  petrol or diesel. Both fuels are known to cause air pollution and are also blamed for contributing to climate change and global warming. Efforts to improve or replace existing technologies include the development ofhybrid vehicles, electric and hydrogen vehicles that do not release pollution into the air.
Among the oldest car manufacturers belongs Tatra, which produced first passenger car in central Europe in 1897. A year later the company made its first truck.

Automobile propulsion  technology under development include petrol/electric and plug-inhybrids, battery electric vehicles, hydrogen cars, biofuels and various alternative fuels.
Advantages: transportation  of goods and people, mobility, independence and convenience.
Disadvantages: cost of the car, repairs and maintenance, fuel costs, parking fees, taxes, insurance, spare parts, air and noise pollution. Road accidents + deaths or injuries, killed animals.
Drivers must obtain a driver´s licence to be allowed to drive a car legally.
